McMurdo Research Station

McMurdo Research Station

The population of Antarctica fluctuates between 1,000 and 4,000 people, depending on the time of the year as of 2023.

For the most part, there are two types of people that reside in Antarctica, those working in research stations and tourists. It has no long-term residents, commercial businesses, towns, or cities.

It’s home to approximately 70 research stations. Each station has around 50 people there in the summer months and 20 in the winter months. Summer lasts from October to April, and the rest of the year is considered winter.

The closest place there is to a town is the U.S. research base, Mcmurdo Station. About 1000 people reside there during the busiest parts of the year.

If you had hopes of visiting Antarctica, you have two options: Work at one of the research stations or visit as a tourist. The process for visiting as a tourist appears to be pretty intense. You’ll need to get permission from the government of the country you reside in. Good luck with that! 🙂
