Drinking blood is not a safe or effective way to hydrate the human body. While blood does contain hydrating water, it is not a suitable source of hydration due to the potential health risks and negative effects it can have on the body.
I will start by saying I am not a doctor and you should always consult with your doctor when making health decisions.
First of all, it is important to recognize that drinking blood is not socially acceptable behavior in western culture. It is considered taboo and may be seen as disturbing or even criminal in many societies. Drinking blood is not a hygienic practice as it can expose the person to harmful bacteria and diseases that may be present in the blood. Even with all of these red flags, there are still thousands of normal people drinking blood for a variety of reasons all over the world.
Beyond the social and health reasons, there are several physiological reasons why drinking blood is not a good way to hydrate your body.
Blood is not pure water. It contains a variety of substances, including electrolytes, nutrients, and proteins. These substances are important for maintaining the body’s balance and function, but they are not meant to be consumed in large quantities. Drinking a large amount of blood could potentially lead to an imbalance of these substances in the body, which could be detrimental to your health. The human digestive system is not designed to handle consuming blood and doing so could to nausea, vomiting, and other gastrointestinal health issues.
The body has a limited ability to absorb and utilize the water found in blood. The body’s primary mechanism for hydration is through the intestine where water is absorbed into the bloodstream through the walls of the intestine. If large amounts of blood are consumed, the body may not be able to absorb all of the water actually leading to dehydration, the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish.
In conclusion, drinking blood is not an effective way to hydrate your body. It’s not socially acceptable and carries significant health risks. There are much more socially acceptable and more effective ways to hydrate the body, such as drinking water or electrolyte-rich fluids such as Gatorade or Powerade.
