How did eBay get its name?

Pierre Omidyar created the website AuctionWeb in 1995. AuctionWeb was the predecessor to the modern day eBay website. AuctionWeb was one of four sites Omidyar ran under the umbrella of his consulting company, The Echo Bay Technology Group. Other websites his company managed were a small travel agency site, a page on the Ebola virus, and a personal shopping site. Omidyar originally tried to register the domain name but found it was already taken by the gold mining company Echo Bay Mines, so he went with instead.

Over time, most users and members of the press began incorrectly referring to AuctionWeb as eBay. This prompted Omidyar to eventually change the name of the auction site from AuctionWeb to eBay. The rest is history.
